Dottie,

It entirely depending on the scale of enginnering you need to support
either a large and heavy object, or to hang it from a wall or roof.
The type of system really has to be tailored to the problem.

We are in the middle of such a big project right now that is a large
architectural restoration that has to be assembled into modular
components transported across the country and installed in a gallery -
so we have had to design connections on the original materials and to
do the conservation treatments with the fact that visitors would be
walking under several tons of old and sometimes fragile components.
The supporting armature/ truss system for the entire project is being
made from aluminum speedrail which can be easily cut and machined, has
innumerable and versitile connectors and couplings. and breaks down
into easily portable components for travel (its the stuff that is used
often for concert rigging and lighting systems).

Cheers!
Dave
