The Cutlural Resource Management Program at the University of Victoria is
offering an eight-day immersion course for museum and heritage
professionals on the management of natural history collections in February
1998. (note that has been rescheduled from November 1997). Please let us know

MANAGING NATURAL HISTORY COLLECTIONS
The diverse, complex, often delicate nature of natural history collections-and
the increasingly vital roles they play in environmental research and public
education-create special challenges for collections managers and curators.
This course explores current principles  and practices in the management of
natural history collections, and discusses the impacts of new technologies,
diminished resources, and pressures for increased accountability, relevance,
and access. You will strengthen your ability to develop and manage natural
history collections by exploring and analyzing:
        -       the roles and nature of natural history collections
        -       their relevance to institutional mission
        -       trends in research and collecting
        -       the expectations of internal and external users
        -       policy frameworks for collections management
        -       documentation requirements
        -       systems of organization and information management
        -       preparation and preservation requirements
        -       approaches to interpretation and exhibition

Dates: February 11 - 20, 1998

Instructor: Dr. Paisley Cato is a specialist in the development, management and
care of natural history collections, and is co-author of 'Developing Staff
Resources for Managing Collections'

Fee: $589 (Canadian Funds, credit or non-credit)

Travel: Victoria is easily accessible by air or ferry from Vancouver or Seattle

Accommodation: B&B accommodation is available both on-campus and in
nearby inns. Prices range from $25 - 75 per night, CDN.
