Don't know if this helps much, but I believe the old "s" that looks
like an "f" was only used when the "s" in question appeared in the
middle of a word, IE., "success" would look like "succefs." However, I
have no idea if that would hold true in an abbreviation.

Good luck!

Hi all,

The historic house where I work at has 5 panes of window glass with
scribbles
on them, mainly from women announcing their marriages. One we think is
from a
child who go into his mother's jewelry because it's on a low pane and
just has
his name "Robert".

Are there any 19th century handwriting experts out there, especially in
the
Washington, DC/ Baltimore area that could help us with deciphering the
names?
I'm pretty good at it; all those years spent deciphering kids'
handwriting in a
classroom has paid off; but there are some abbreviations and letters
that I'm
not familiar with.

For example, there's a couple of spots where it looks like M/N _ p has
been
written. We're not sure if that "P" is the old "s" that looks like an
"f" and
the whole thing is supposed to be "Mrs" or if it's an abbreviation for
married
like "nup". Most scribbles are like Jane Smith now Mrs. J Doe.

Thanks in advance!!
