The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts is seeking to fill the position of Manager, 
Photography Department and Chief Collections Photographer. As manager, this 
position will ensure the Photography department is run effectively and 
efficiently through the supervision of departmental staff, freelance or 
contract photographers, and will perform most of the studio art photography 
required for museum projects. This position ensures the overall quality of 
all photographic images produced by the department; oversees budget 
development and tracking; oversees departmental scheduling; establishes and 
implements policies and procedures for the photo lab; ensures proper use and 
maintenance of lab equipment and machinery; and contributes to strategic 
planning for the department’s short and long-term needs. As Chief Collections 
Photographer, this position has primary responsibility for photographing 
works of art of all sizes and materials, exhibition installations and 
architectural photographs, utilizing 8x10, 4x5, 35mm, and digital cameras. 
This position must use aesthetic and strategic judgment to tailor each studio 
shot to the institution’s needs, resulting in publication-quality to record-
quality photographs as required. This position ensures that department 
procedures and training place as top priority the safety of valuable art 
objects. 
Qualifications: This position requires advanced knowledge and extensive 
experience with hands-on photography processes, including camera and lab work 
for both E6 and black and white photography and at least some knowledge of 
digital imaging. An advanced knowledge and understanding of the use and 
maintenance of photographic equipment and machinery (including 8x10, 4x5, 
35mm, and digital cameras, studio equipment, processors, and developers) is 
required. The selected candidate must demonstrate the ability to produce 
photographic images for fine art publications, working with multiple clients 
to provide mutually satisfactory and consistently high quality work, and the 
ability to manage multiple priorities with institutional goals in mind. This 
position requires a BFA or higher in Studio Art/Photography and substantial 
experience in art museum studio photography. A portfolio of studio art 
photographs (4x5 transparencies or color digital images preferred) of works 
in different media, as well as no less than ten tearsheets from arts 
publications featuring applicants’ studio art photographs must be submitted 
along with the application. A security background check will be required. 

Hiring Range: $40,443 - $49,500 with full benefits. Salary will be determined 
based on qualifications and experience.
