      FRESNO ART MUSEUM
      Fresno, California

      EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR


      THE POSITION
      The Board of Trustees is seeking a well-qualified and dynamic
individual to direct and lead the next phase in the development of the
Fresno Art Museum (FAM). Noted for being the first regional arts center in
the Central Valley of California, FAM is a cultural vanguard in the visual
arts. FAM is known for its outstanding changing exhibitions, educational
programs, and permanent collections of modern and contemporary art,
pre-Columbian art from Latin America, and French-Post Impressionist prints.
In addition, the museum is currently realizing a master building and
development plan, including an enclosed 14,000 square-foot Sculpture Park
that opened to the public in September 2000.

      The Board of Trustees and museum staff are seeking a director who can
bring energy and vitality to the museum and communicate the museum mission
and artistic vision to the diverse Fresno community. He/she must have the
highest personal ethics and integrity and the ability to bring together a
variety of viewpoints. In summary, FAM is seeking a leader for an innovative
board and staff who will capitalize on existing strengths and provide
leadership and management for the next chapter in the museum's history.



      THE FRESNO COMMUNITY
      At the center of California's Central Valley, Fresno is now the
fastest growing major city in California, the second fastest growing
high-tech employment market in the state, and the center of the region's
agribusiness. The city is proud of the spirit and diversity of its citizens
and its high-quality, affordable lifestyle. Fresno has all the amenities of
a large city, combined with the wonderful elements of a small, familiar
community.

      Other museums in Fresno include the Fresno Metropolitan Museum, The
Discovery Center, Meux Home Museum, Arte Americas, and the African American
Museum. Other cultural attractions include the Fresno Philharmonic as well
as a variety of music, dance, and theater groups. Local institutions of
higher leaning include California State University, Fresno Pacific
University, and Fresno City College. Fresno is also easily accessible to
three national parks: Yosemite, Sequoia, and Kings Canyon.



      RESPONSIBILITIES
      The executive director reports to the Board of Trustees and has full
authority and responsibility as the chief executive officer of the
organization for staff and their activities. Responsibilities of the
director include:

        a.. Providing creative leadership to the staff and Board to initiate
and implement an overall vision and direction that maximizes the museum's
potential for being an integral cultural force in the community;


        b.. Working with the Board of Trustees to raise funds to support
museum initiatives;


        c.. Bringing a high degree of visibility to Fresno by serving as
chief spokesperson for the museum at local, regional, and national levels
and to all professional, civic, government, and private agencies, as well as
to the media; overseeing the museum's response to community needs and
strengthening partnerships with relevant community groups to further the
museum's mission and visibility;


        d.. Directing and coordinating all administrative aspects of the
museum; maintaining an effective organization with respect to structure,
personnel, and physical plant; setting priorities and allocating resources
accordingly; establishing and maintaining continual planning cycles;


        e.. Providing management direction to the staff, which entails
participating in the selection and hiring of staff, conducting performance
evaluation reviews and establishing guidelines for staff salaries; ensuring
compliance with appropriate personnel policies and human resource
procedures;


        f.. Supervising the development and administration of the museum's
operating budget.



      IDEAL CANDIDATE CHARACTERISTICS
      The ideal candidate will possess a combination of the following:

        a.. Strong leadership abilities, a high level of initiative and
entrepreneurship, interpersonal and cultural sensitivity, creative and
flexible problem solving skills, and the ability to direct and motivate
staff and Board.


        b.. Proven skills in fundraising, financial management, human
resource management, public and community relations, and be capable of
formulating future directions and artistic vision for the museum.


        c.. Ability to work successfully in a liaison role, which requires
establishing and maintaining effective communication and mutual
understanding between the Board of Trustees, museum staff, volunteers,
funders, and the community.


        d.. Demonstrated success in working with diverse constituencies;
politically astute.



      MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

      Education: B.A./B.S. required; M.A./M.S. preferred

      Minimum Experience: Five years of senior management experience in the
operation and management of a museum or non-profit arts organization with a
budget of at least $1 million. The majority of past experience should be at
the level of director, deputy/associate/assistant director or comparable
management background.




      COMPENSATION
      The Fresno Art Museum is offering competitive compensation,
commensurate with the candidate's experience, plus a fringe benefit package.
