Museum Preparator

Duties to be performed:

Work with Registrars, Curators and Director to design, install, and
deinstall loan and permanent collection exhibitions - including space
preparation, hanging, lighting, signage, and labeling to create unified and
effective displays.  Cut mats, frame works for exhibition, carry out minor
repair work on frames.

Work with Registrars to receive and unpack artworks arriving at the museum;
properly prepare, wrap and crate outgoing loans.  Assist Registrar in
maintaining collections room and other museum storage facilities.

Maintain museum tools and workshop in good order, procure needed supplies.
Establish safe and effective procedures for operation of the museum
workshop.

Design, construct, and maintain museum display furniture and mountings.
Design and build cabinets and storage units as needed.

Maintain museum lighting system; ensure that an adequate supply of bulbs
and fixtures is on hand.

Conduct daily gallery inspections (checking lighting, seating, labels,
cleanliness of vitrines, etc.) to ensure that works of art are displayed
safely and that the museum presents an attractive and professional face to
the public.

Assist with setup and takedown for museum special events (including
seating, special lighting, platforms, etc.).

Provide supervision of work/study students as needed.

Necessary Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree with specialization in art, design, or a related field,
or an equivalent combination of education and experience is necessary.
Three to five years experience in the care and handling of museum objects.
Knowledge of and ability to use common power and hand tools is desirable.
Ability to work as part of a team; meet deadlines and be aware of budgeting
constraints.

Desired Qualifications:

Excellent design skills and building/construction abilities.
Institutional experience working as an exhibit designer or museum
preparator.
