A question for people who have worked with audio files on their websites -

I've working on putting images and information contained in our physical WW2
exhibit into a virtual exhibit on the internet and I want to include small
clips of oral histories from the people who are mentioned in the exhibit.
The problem is file size v quality.

The original are .wav files and sound OK (not great but OK - if anyone has
any ideas re cleaning up audio files I'd love to hear them!!!!) but are
around 9mb. I've saved as .rm, .mp3, and as .au. Some sound better than
others but are much too large, others sound OK and the file size was OK on a
cable hookup but broke up when using a 56k modem.

So, what do you recommend regarding file type and size? I've looked at
www.loc.gov and noticed they use both .rm and .wav but all the files were
pretty large. Our site is small and storing several 5 or 6mb sound files
won't be possible.

btw - If you like you can see the *very* rough draft of the website here
www.sumtercountymuseum.com/exhibits/ww2/ww2title.html

I'd appreciate any comments or suggestions you might have - including any
critique on the exhibit itself.

Thanks,
Rickie Good
