INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITY The Westport (Washington) Maritime Museum has an
11-month internship available for an Education Assistant. The position is
funded through the Washington Service Corps (Americorps). Candidates must
meet Service Corps requirements of being between the ages of 17 and 24, U.S.
citizen, and resident in the State of Washington on the day of hire.
Applications will be accepted immediately. The position will be filled
sometime between January 1 and March 1, 1999.

The Education Assistant will take the lead in upgrading and expanding the
museum's education programs. These programs currently consist of a
Children's Discovery Room plus K-12 and adult tours of the museum and nearby
lighthouse. The museum is interested in developing an education outreach
program. The museum has a small staff that averages 2.5 FTE (full-time
equivalents). Like all staff members, the Education Assistant will also be
expected to participate in the broad range of museum activities. These
include collections management, exhibit development, facility management,
visitor service, and volunteer development.

The Westport Maritime Museum is located in a former Coast Guard Lifeboat
Station on the southwest shore of Grays Harbor, a large bay on Washington's
outer coast about 40 miles north of the mouth of the Columbia River. The
museum's mission is to preserve and interpret the history of the South Beach
(the coastal area stretching 15 miles from Grays Harbor to Willapa Bay). The
museum complex consists of five structures, two of which date from the
station's construction in 1939. The museum also operates daily tours at
Grays Harbor Lighthouse, an 1898 structure located about two miles from the
main museum campus. More information about the museum can be found on the
web at http://www.westportwa.com/museum.

The museum is located in Westport, a commercial and sports fishing port with
a permanent population of about 2,000. The population increases somewhat in
summer months when local businesses expand to serve tourists visiting the
coast. Local facilities include a health clinic, grocery store, barber shop
and hair salon, video stores, restaurants, and service station. Aberdeen, 20
miles east of Westport, has a population of about 16,000 and offers a full
range of facilities. The internship carries a monthly stipend of $700 plus
an educational award of $4,700 upon successful completion of 11-months'
service. Medical benefits are included, as is a child-care subsidy for
qualifying participants.
