of the Program in Visual and Cultural Studies
at the University of Rochester (New York).

        (call for papers)

The program in Visual and Cultural Studies at the
University of Rochester was established five years
ago as a consequence of emerging challenges to the
monolithic construction of Art and Art History. The
subsequent proliferation of insurgent methodologies
has revitalised the field of visual studies at the
same time throwing the very notion of a (singular)
discipline into question. This conference will address
interdisciplinary approaches toward a reconfiguration
of the discourse of the visual and address the question
of how, at this juncture, various theoretical vantages
can be negotiated.

We invite submissions to the following panel topics from
graduate students and independent scholars working in
visual theory. We also encourage the submission of abstracts
which address the general methodological concerns of the
conference to be included in an open panel.

(panel topics)

        = archiving postmodern criticism, or,
                                canonical ironies.

= visual culture and pedagogical sites

= recouping or recanting: seeking the other in
                                        foundational texts

= museum practice as pheonix or facade

        = constructed subjectivities: methodological
                                intersections of identity representations

        = open session

Please send in a 350-500 word abstract outlining a
paper you wish to present at this conference with
your name and contact address on a separate sheet
of paper. Decisions will be made on the basis of
blind review and notification of results will be
mailed by February 1st, 1995. Papers should be
limited to 20 minutes in length.
