ANNUAL SALARY: $28,397- $34,459. (Depending on experience, continuous service and salaries of existing employees). Employees new to state government typically start at $28,397.

Duties: A. Collections Management: Implement the Collections Management Manual using Museum Collections Policy & Procedures as a basis. Inventory, accession and catalog the estimated 200,000 artifacts and objects.  Help determine placement and disposition of objects, based on condition and historic importance, and criteria outlined in the Collections Management Manual. Assess and record detailed physical condition of artifacts.  Perform or supervise all handling of artifacts, including all movement of artifacts according to standard museum practice, taking into account that the sites consist of both enclosed and open-air exhibits.  Work with Concessionaires in care of objects in concessions; annually inspect artifacts in concessions. Train and supervise staff and volunteers on the care and handling of objects and collections records.  Ensure the most significant and fragile items in the collection are physically protected in environmentally controlled and secure storage, exhibit, and work areas.  Maintain and upgrade as necessary all collection management systems, including computer software, appraisals and inventories, and permanent records including legal documents, accession/de-accession records, loan forms, object and donor files, condition reports, conservation reports, location records and insurance forms.  Work with Curator of History to complete the determination as to which objects were originally loaned to the collections, locate and contact loaners, and create or update forms as needed. Maintain accurate records to ensure that the collection is legally and financially protected. Develop 2-5 year exhibit plan. B. Management and Operation of Curatorial Center: Supervises 3 plus volunteers and the internship program. Responsible for performance management, supervision, discipline, recruitment and selection, work assignment.  Recommends hiring, firing, promotions and pay.  Approves leave requests, travel, time sheets, work schedules, training.  Coordinate use of Curatorial Center with staff and visitors. Oversee operation of the McFarland Curatorial Center, including building maintenance and cleaning, public hours, security, and maintenance of furnishings and equipment.  Coordinate maintenance of Curatorial Center building and grounds with other on-site staff.
C. Activity Coordination and Interaction: Coordinate with Preservation and Maintenance crews in cataloging, preparing, and removing objects from buildings slated for preservation or maintenance and protecting objects integral to the building. Train and assist staff and seasonal workers on collection needs and public interface regarding collections.  
D. Dissemination of Information: Respond to inquiries from individuals, groups and institutions by providing information or referrals on the collections and Montana history. Conduct tours of the collection and present lectures, programs, and workshops to groups and organizations.  
E. Budgeting and Grant Writing: Identify potential grants for collections and conservation activities. Prepares grant proposals; coordinate with staff in grant development and implementation, and with other personnel in preparing grant proposals related to curatorial activities.

KNOWLEDGE OF: Museum practices, techniques, and philosophies, including: ethics, records management and information retrieval, exhibit design and production, registration and accessioning procedures, artifact cataloguing and classification systems, artifact care and handling, storage methods, and emerging technology involved in artifact preservation and conservation.  Personnel policies and procedures, MOM manual, state and federal personnel regulations; Western and Montana history and material culture; Laws affecting museum practices, e.g., laws related to charitable giving, the Native American Graves and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA), the state loan law, the Endangered Species Act, copyright, etc., and changes in those laws.  
 
SKILLS IN: Microsoft Office Products (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Access) and PastPerfect data base software.  Public relations, public speaking, and business management skills are also required.  Grant writing, budget management, facility management and event coordination.
 
ABILITY TO: Communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Conduct primary research and convey the findings of that research through a variety of means (e.g. exhibit labels, publications, presentations, workshops, correspondence, and personal conversation).   Work well with the public, sometimes in difficult or confrontational situations.  Supervise staff, volunteers and student interns in collection and research activities. Use a computer in local area network, database management, spreadsheets and word processing; ability to use and maintain environmental monitoring equipment (e.g., light meter and recording hygrothermographs).
 
Education/Experience: The above knowledge, skills, and abilities are usually acquired through a combination of education and experience equivalent to a masters degree in Museum Studies, History, Fine Art, History Administration or a related field and 2-3 years of job related experience, 2 years of supervision in an enclosed and open air museum setting. Other combinations of education and experience, which could provide these knowledge, skills, abilities, and competencies, will be evaluated on an individual basis.
 
Application and Selection Process:  Selection procedures used to evaluate an applicant's qualifications may include an evaluation of the State of Montana application and any required supplemental material, a structured oral interview including a performance examination, and reference checks.  Applicants will be notified when screening has been completed.

Examples of such documentation include a birth certificate or social security card along with a driver's license or other picture I.D., a U.S. passport or a green card.
 
The Montana Compliance with Military Selective Service Act: In accordance with The Montana Compliance with Military Selective Service Act, men selected for state government employment must produce documentation showing compliance with the federal Military Selective Service Act.  Examples of this documentation include a registration card issued by Selective Service or a letter from Selective Service showing a person was not required to register.

1. This position is responsible for the legal and physical care and intellectual control of the Virginia and Nevada City historical collections.
