This is quite common in the UK. Under English law although people may be appointed to a museum board by an organisation, they are legally required to act independently (of the appointing body) and in the best interests of the board.

If this is not automatically true in your jurisdiction you might want to make it part of the by-laws.

In the UK you will also come across boards who appoint their own members (i.e. if someone leaves the remaining members appoint a replacement).

I am curious to know if any other museums out there have a Board of
Directors where some of the voting members of the Board are appointed by
virtue of belonging to a particular group (in our case, Town Council,
Dept. of Education, bands (as in aboriginal)).

We are (or should be) looking at our by-laws and this is one that needs
to be looked at as it hasn't been updated in about 15 years and some of
the groups named no longer exist, have divided and become new legal
entities (we think, I'm still working on that aspect).

So,

1. do you have "ex officio with voting status" board members
2. how many board members are elected and how many are ex officio
