California Museum Month
EXECUTIVE DEPARTMENT
STATE OF CALIFORNIA
P R O C L A M A T I O N
by the
Governor of the State of California

WHEREAS, California is home to more than 1,300
museums, with at least one museum located in every
county; and

WHEREAS, California's museums serve more than 26
million visitors every year, attracting both tourists
and local visitors; and

WHEREAS, as research and educational institutions,
museums help to preserve and interpret artifacts,
offer informative programs, showcase diverse resources
and provide a window into our society's art, science,
history and culture; and

WHEREAS, museums are a valuable part of the cultural
richness of the Golden State; and

WHEREAS, during California Museum Month, the
California Association of Museums is raising awareness
about the important role museums play in California
and the diversity of services they provide to local
communities;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, GRAY DAVIS, Governor of the State
of California, do hereby proclaim May, 2002 as
"California Museum Month."

IN WITNESS WHEREOF I have hereunto set my hand and
caused the Great Seal of the State of California to be
affixed this the twenty-fifth day of March 2002.
