Assistant Manager for Rigging

The Metropolitan Museum of Art, one of the world's finest museums seeks an Assistant Manager for Rigging to oversee and direct the installation, deinstallation, and movement of fine art.  This person will report directly to the Museum's Building Manager and will directly manage and provide leadership to a rigging team of eight to twelve employees. The rigging team is also responsible for the rigging, transportation and placement of heavy items, machinery, and other facilities materials within the Museum.  The position may include involvement in future exhibition planning for art on loan.

The Assistant Manager for Rigging will direct the movement of artwork from transport to installation and deinstallation; inspect and review art for transportation and installation; 
participate in the crating and uncrating of fine art; responsible for hiring, training, and staff development, for both advancement and disciplinary causes of a rigging team between eight and twelve employees; coordinate with the curators, conservators, and facilities teams to ensure proper installation and deinstallation; respond to rigging requests from all Museum departments as needed; organize and maintain departmental records and work requests; and other related facility duties.

Successful candidates will possess a minimum of five years of previous experience with art handling including installing, deinstalling, and loading for transportation or related experience.  Candidates must have complete confidence in their ability to handle irreplaceable, priceless art objects.  Must have the ability to communicate and build relationships with employees and departments across the Museum. Must have previous experience managing a team of specialized employees.  Knowledge of heavy rigging equipment and techniques is required.  Equipment includes gantries, tiering machines and forklifts.  A bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience is required.  Knowledge packing and shipping techniques is required.  Knowledge of art materials is preferred.
