Good morning, Museum'lers - I use heavy duty (freezer) aluminum foil/tinfoil
as the first layer wrapped around the cardboard tube at least twice. I get
my supply from the local membership warehouse and/or food discount business
for a very inexpensive price and a huge quantity. After I rip off the size I
need, I hold it up to the light to make sure that there are no pinholes in
the piece before I use it. One needs to use a barrier that is a vapor
barrier as I understand it since the low-weight molecular acids that are in
the cardboard (i.e. formic, acetic) can't transfer thru an impermeable
barrier like aluminum foil but can transfer thru permeable barriers such as
Mylar and paper-based products.

I then cover the foil with a layer of fabric or tissue to soften the
crinkles in the foil before I then roll the textile on. I haven't been able
to get the foil to go on completely smoothly on any tube longer than about
18".
