                      Fiscal Year 1998 Guidelines for
                          National Leadership Grants

                Washington, DC -- The first grant guidelines for the
                Institute of Museum and Library Services National
                Leadership Grants are now available. Diane Frankel,
                Director of IMLS noted, "I am so pleased to present this
                opportunity to support projects of national
significance.
                National Leadership Grants will enhance the quality of
                library services nationwide and provide an opportunity
                for collaboration between museums and libraries."

                About National Leadership Grants

                The application deadline is April 17, 1998. Awards will
                be made in September, 1998. Award amounts range
                from $15,000 to $500,000. Awards over $250,000
                must be matched at least one-to-one with non Federal
                support, which may include in-kind cost sharing.

                Awards will be made for the following purposes:

                1) Education and training for library and information
                science

                2) Research and demonstration projects in library and
                information science

                3) Preservation and digitization of library materials

                4) Model programs of collaboration between libraries
                and museums.

                Who is Eligible? All types of libraries and museums may
                apply for National Leadership Grants. Libraries may
                apply individually or in partnership. Museums may apply
                only in a partnership that includes at least one library
                partner. Institutions of higher education may apply
                individually or in a partnership.

                How Much Funding is Available

                $2,371,937 is available for collaborative projects
                between museums and libraries, of which $1,000,000 is
                contributed by they IMLS Office of Museum Services
                and the remainder by the IMLS Office of Library
                Services. The library appropriation also provides
                $4,115,813 for the other three categories of National
                Leadership Grants.

                IMLS Call for Reviewers

                All National Leadership Grants will be awarded through
                a competitive peer review process. Library, museum and
                information science professionals are needed to review
                grant applications. Reviewers must be available to
review
                approximately eight proposals during a four week period
                beginning in May 1998. To apply to participate in the
                review process, please complete the reviewer recruitment
                form available in the National Leadership Grant
                application and on the agency's website or call IMLS for
                an application.

                About the IMLS -- IMLS was created by the Museum
                and Library Service Act of 1996, P.L. 104-208. IMLS
                is an independent federal grantmaking agency serving the
                public by strengthening museums and libraries. IMLS
                consists of an Office of the Director, Office Of Museum
