Erin made some good suggestions. We are involved in a similar situation
here. We have decided to proceed with an "inventory" of the collection first
(as distinguished from cataloguing the collection). That will allow us to
get object descriptions, measurements, markings, etc. with the help of a
crew of volunteers who may not understand Nomenclature or cataloguing. We
use PastPerfect, so the inventory information will be put in the computer
database. That will give us a handle on what we have, whether we need help
with cataloguing certain types of objects, etc. Staff can then add the
appropriate detail to the item descriptions. And by all means, as Erin
suggested, don't get further behind by letting current accessions slide.
