Gund Curator of Western Art and History

The Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art is pleased
to announce the expanded search for a motivated individual who will serve
as the Gund Curator of Western Art and History. This newly created chair
is fully endowed with funding that also supports research and publication.
To fill this exciting opportunity the institution seeks an experienced
individual to provide leadership for development, management and
interpretation of its collection of Art of the American West. The
institution is dedicated to inspiring an appreciation and understanding of
the art, history and cultures of the American West and the indigenous
peoples of North America. The museum’s 12 year-old, 73,000 square foot
facility has been a dramatic addition to the Indianapolis architectural
skyline and cultural climate. Located at the gateway to White River State
Park, the Eiteljorg is a leader in the midst of a developing district of
museums, gardens, a zoo and other cultural attractions in the heart of
downtown Indianapolis. The Eiteljorg is nearing completion of a $37
million capital/endowment campaign that will result in a doubling of public
spaces, including construction of the Gund gallery of art of the American
West.
The Gund Curator of Western Art and History, is responsible for
developing and refining the museum’s Western art collection and producing
engaging exhibitions in this field. This senior level person is expected
to actively publish fresh research in interpreting their area of
responsibility. The collection spans from the early artists/explorers such
as Charles Bird King, Alfred Jacob Miller, and John Mix Stanley to image
makers ranging from Frederic Remington and Charles Russell to N. C. Wyeth.
It is especially strong in major works by Taos Society of Artists members
Victor Higgins, Bert Phillips, E. M. Hennings, Walter Ufer, E. I. Couse,
Ernest Blumenschein, and Buck Dunton. Modernist images of the West are
represented by Georgia O’Keeffe, Marsden Hartley, John Marin, John Sloan,
Randall Davey, Robert Henri and many others. Management of the Gund
Collection is a key responsibility and this collection includes significant
works by A. J. Miller, Albert Bierstadt, Charles Schreyvogel, Frederic
Remington, Charles Russell, Edward Borein, Henry Farny and many others.
The curator will be responsible for strategic planning for the collection’s
development, working with donors and other museum patrons. They will also
play a key role in nurturing the Western Art Society, a group formed to
support this portion of the collection. Exhibition planning duties will
see to presentations of the permanent collection, participating in the
development of major multi-disciplinary exhibits integrating fine art with
historical and cultural materials and coordinating appropriate incoming
travelling exhibitions. Qualified candidates must have an MA or higher
degree in a relevant field, with demonstrated experience in responsible
curatorial positions. Knowledge of American Western art, art history and a
deep understanding of the historical and ethnic contexts of the West are
necessary for success. Strong writing and verbal skills are required.
Candidates must be excited by opportunities to write, publish, teach and
otherwise participate in furthering the educational mission of the
institution. Send resume with references to: Personnel Coordinator, The
