You have to follow - Twitter is a conversation, not a megaphone. We follow other arts and history organizations, community leaders, social media experts, prominent individuals, experts in areas of interest to us, local businesses who have supported us or with whom we interact, local hotels and restaurants - I learn a lot through Twitter, and pass it on to our people through re-tweets. I pick up great ideas from other museums outside of our area. And often lately, news breaks first through Twitter!

Recently a local preservation battle with a quick deadline for action was promoted through Twitter, and hundreds of people signed petitions to landmark a threatened building. We re-tweeted, and supported the effort through petitions at an event on our site. Our event was re-tweeted widely because it was not ours alone - the event became a community event. Give and get back. That's social media.
