Laura,

The making of musuem reproductions is not a simple proposition in almost all
cases. It requires meticulous study of extant period examples, a firm
grounding in period technology, and years of acquiring skills using period tools.

True insights and wisdom about historic technologies and craft work come from
years of studying primary and secondary sources, close examination of
antiques and archaeological resources, and the daily practice and refinement of craft
skills. Insights based on singular craft experiences are almost always flawed.

Having been a craftsman in the department of historic trades at Colonial
WIlliamsburg for a period of seven years in the 1980's I can attest to that.

Developing a well organized and focussed period crafts program can add
immeasurable programatic value to a historic site or institution - but it is not a
thing to be pursued casually.

Cheers!
Dave
