I know you said you were mainly interested in art or history museums, but
thought I'd throw in two children's museums-one in a depot and one in
something "related." The Youth Museum of Southeastern West Virginia in
Beckley, West Virginia is located in a building made from four actual
boxcars. The building is built around the cars and won an architectural
award. The museum is located in New River City Park adjacent to an old
railroad siding.
Tthe Children's Museum of Arkansas in Little Rock is built in historic Union
Station in downtown Little Rock. The museum looks out over the still active
rail yards (trains go by on average every 15 minutes) and one of their
exhibits is a recreated caboose in which model trains are displayed for kids
to work.
