This is going to sound pedantic (do excuse me), but "da Vinci" is not
Leonardo da Vinci's family name.  It means he is from Vinci, a small town
between Lucca and Florence.  Referring to this artist as Leonardo, without a
last or family name, is indeed correct..
 
Enough.  Sorry for the interruption!
