CLASS TITLE: CURATOR

CLASS SUMMARY The Curator works under administrative direction and is
responsible for registration and collections management, conservation,
collections development, and research related to collections office.
Participates in exhibit development, policy development, and budgeting
as assigned. Teaches and team-teaches undergraduate and graduate classes
relating to office. Serves as NAGPRA specialist. Limited supervision
duties. Reports to the director. This position is governed by
agency/institution policy.

EXAMPLES OF WORK Responsible for museum registration and collections
management: Prepares and maintains catalog, inventory records,
photographic documentation, and database of donated and purchased
collections and other collections assigned tot he formal stewardship of
the museum; notes donor, seller, history, and care of articles; responds
to requests for collections access; monitors and tracks collections use;
works with University Finance Office to ensure adequate insurance
coverage. Manages loans of collections: processes loan requests to lend
or acquire items for specified time periods, maintains loan records,
requests extensions, and contacts borrowers when delinquent;
accommodates requests for collections use and access; monitors use of
loan collections. Manages museum's conservation concerns: Ensures proper
condition-reporting; advises in methods of preventive conservation;
monitors storage and exhibition areas to prevent damage to articles due
to temperature or humidity levels, lighting, insects, or visitors;
prepares articles for storage or exhibit using proper conservation
techniques, applying laboratory conservation as assigned; develops and
implements a conservation program (including IPM) to preserve the
collections and monitor the maintenance and storage of exhibits;
researches conservation technology and products and requisitions needed
items. Provides support to exhibits development and participates as
assigned in planning and installation of exhibits. Recommends objects
for exhibit and program use in light of conservation concerns. Serves as
NAGPRA specialist, keeping abreast of the law and its implementation.
Interfaces with representatives of Indian Nations as assigned.
Coordinates museum's acquisition efforts to help ensure informed,
measured, legal, and ethical growth of collections, interfacing with and
representing patrons wishing to donate collections to the museum.
Researches aspects of collections in keeping with job responsibilities
to help ensure accuracy of information in records, exhibits, catalogs,
and grants related to collections, etc. Analyzes collections needs and
participates in policy and procedure development related to office and
as assigned by director. Makes cost projections to director in matters
relating to collections and works with administrative assistant to order
collections supplies. May supervise students and volunteers working in
collections. May supervise professional staff, researchers, and faculty
on project basis. Performs related responsibilities as required or
assigned. Maintains an active rile in the museum community through
attendance at professional conferences and workshops and other
activities that provide professional development and networking
opportunities to strengthen and promote the Museum.

WORKING RELATIONSHIPS The Curator of Collections has regular contact
with agency/institution staff, museum volunteers, commissioners,
departmental personnel, in and out-of-state museum employees, donors,
and the general public.

SPECIAL JOB DIMENSIONS Occasional after hours duties and heavy lifting
is required. Occasional in-state and weekend travel is required.

KNOWLEDGES, ABILITIES, AND SKILLS Knowledge of museum law. Knowledge of
museum registration techniques and catalog systems. Knowledge of
historic research techniques and procedures. Knowledge of preservation
and restoration principles for diverse museum collections. Knowledge of
museum conservation environment principles and limited laboratory
conservation techniques. Ability to develop and monitor legal contracts.
Ability to compose concise description and condition reports of objects.
Ability to maintain catalog and inventory records, including digital
records on diverse genres of collections. Ability to prepare articles
for insurance identification. Ability to monitor and project budget.
Ability to analyze collections needs and make recommendations. Ability
to organize and direct the work of others. Ability to participate as a
member of a team. Skills in object photography needed. Organizational,
communication, and interpersonal skills are essential.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS The formal education equivalent of a bachelor's
degree in history, art, museum studies, anthropology, or a related
field; plus two years' experience in museum exhibit programs,
conservation of artifacts, or a related field. Master's degree in Museum
Studies, one years' experience in museum collections position, and
knowledge of Arkansas history and material culture is preferred. Other
job related education and/or experience may be substituted for all or
part of these basic requirements upon approval of the Qualifications
Review Committee.
