Salry history is a tough subject I agree, but I have a philosophy of
asking for salaries -- look at what your personal goals are.  The
salary at the last job you did has no direct link to a potential job.
Turn your focus forward and look at where you want to go, not where
you've been.  I agree with one response that employers may have no idea
what to ask.  It is best to get them to say their salary range first,
but if I must go first I always say that my salray is negotiable
therefore if I ask too much, the institution isn't left without a
possibility of dialogue.  Good luck!
