The John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art has an opening for the
position of Senior Preparator. The Senior Preparator has primary
responsibility for managing all preparation work for the Art Museum,
Circus Museum, Tibbals Learning Center, Cà d’Zan, the Historic Asolo
Theater, the historic grounds and gardens, and all storage facilities.
This position supervises the preparation staff in the technical and
manual work required to ensure the safe movement, storage, and
installation of all Museum collection objects and artifacts as well as
loaned objects. The Preparator works with curators, registrars,
conservators, facilities and security staff in planning and supervising
movement and installation of works for all exhibition spaces, permanent
and temporary. Supervises work of preparation staff/contractors to
assist with planning and supervising or directing the fabrication,
installation, disassembly and storage of collections and exhibits,
install, maintain and operate gallery lighting, work with registration,
conservation, exhibition, and curatorial staff to fabricate and install
exhibitions, objects, and supporting materials, install and maintain
permanent galleries, special exhibit and temporary exhibition spaces,
and art storage areas. Required to oversee the maintenance and running
of computerized exhibit areas. Pack and crate objects. May be expected
to courier works on loan. Maintain carpentry shop, tools, materials, and
supplies and oversees maintenance for mechanical lifts. This job entails
working closely with the Registrar’s office in receiving, mounting and
dispersing works in the permanent collection and on loan. Participates
in emergency planning, response and mitigation. 

B.A, B.F.A. or B.S. in a field related to the museum profession, such
as Fine Arts, Studio Art, Art History, or Media and Performing Arts
preferred. Minimum of 5 years related experience in a museum
environment. Thorough understanding and ability to implement proper
procedures for the installation and handling of works of art.
Demonstrated management ability with respect to scheduling and
supervising staff, budgets, and monitoring projects. Knowledge of design
and printing, and strong computer skills required. Knowledge of
Photoshop, CAD or other design programs a plus. Ability to design layout
of special and permanent exhibitions including physical gallery changes.
Demonstrated outstanding fabrication skills required. An interest in new
media and technology is desirable. Must have the ability to lift up to
50 pounds, climb and descend ladders and stairs, and walk long
distances. This position requires a valid class D Florida driver’s
license.
