The following is an outline summary of our upcoming course which
examines the central role of education, interpretation and public
programming in the museum and heritage community. Thanks for

- Introduction to the programming function in visitor-centered
institutions: definition, purpose, issues
- The changing context: internal and external
- Trends
- Mandate, policy and staff
responsibilities

TUESDAY, December 3
- The search for a theory of museum communication
- Approaches to planning
- Field Trip and Report:  Assessing the visitor experience


PART TWO:  THE PROGRAM PLANNING PROCESS

WEDNESDAY, December 4
- Objectives, policy, priorities, the role of the educator/interpreter
- An exercise in policy development
- Needs assessment and target audiences
- Audience research
- Program development and selection criteria

THURSDAY, December 5
- Community consultation and development; partnerships
- Cultural diversity
- Approaches to planning (continued)
- Program design; program delivery
- Liaison with other institutional services and functions
- Project management:  the team, roles, scheduling, budgets

FRIDAY, December 6
- Field Trip and Report:  The Visitor Experience
- Marketing:  product research, promotion, advertising
- The quality factor:  evaluation, visitor service orientation
- Human Resources:  the learning organization
- Introduction to the Team Project:  initiate teams amd topics

Instructor: Lynn Kurylo is Head of Programs and Interpretation,
McMichael Canadian Art Collection and a consultant specializing in
progam design and audience development
Dates: December 2—11, 1996
