Vizcaya Learning Programs Manager—Volunteer Guides Program


Vizcaya Museum and Gardens is an AAM-accredited, American Renaissance estate in a spectacular subtropical setting on Biscayne Bay in Miami. The Museum is in the midst of developing new programs to engage the local community in learning through the arts, history, and the environment, and embarking on a government-funded $50-million capital program to rehabilitate the main house, gardens, and the Vizcaya village. Vizcaya attracts approximately 150,000 visitors each year and continues to make the collections, gardens, and grounds of Vizcaya relevant and educational for a broad spectrum of Miami-Dade residents and visitors alike. The Vizcaya Volunteer Guides Program comprises roughly 100 volunteers who provide invaluable assistance to more than 100,000 visitors, 364 days per year.

The Volunteer Guides Program Manager will play a key role in these efforts by overseeing and managing the Volunteer Guides Program including:

• Day to day supervision and management of Volunteer Guides and Volunteer Guides Program with evening and weekend work required
• Creating, revising, implementing, and facilitating training sessions for both new and continuing Guides
• Creating long and short term goals for Guiding Program that support strategic goals of the Learning Division and Museum under the guidance of the Deputy Director for Learning 
• Developing and implementing strategies to recruit and diversify Volunteer Guides corps
• Strengthening the Guiding Program through implementation of performance evaluation structure, including coaching of individual Guides and Mentor training 
• Creating and implementing infrastructure of Guides Program to most effectively utilize Museum and Volunteer resources, including but not limited to, tour schedules, procedural systems, and membership guidelines 
• Creating and launching new tours for adult audiences based on Vizcaya’s resources, strategic plans, educational philosophies, and visitor interests
• Evaluation of current Guides Program and recommendations for revisions, eliminations, and new additions to support Learning Division and institutional goals
• Serving as the Guides’ liaison with Vizcaya administration, and administration liaison with Guides and Guides Advisory Council 
• Conducting tours for the visiting public as necessary (includes a variety of constituent audiences)
• Creating and maintaining the Volunteer Guides Program budget
• Collaborating closely with colleagues in the Learning, Curatorial, and Advancement Divisions on specific initiatives and institutional projects

Minimum Requirements: Bachelor’s degree in Art History, Humanities, Social Sciences or related field. Two years of experience as a museum educator or education administration in a visual arts and/or history museum environment. Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication (writing samples will be requested) skills. Demonstrated ability to collaborate with volunteers and professionals. Results oriented and attention to detail.

Preferred Requirements: Minimum of three years experience supervising volunteers and developing and facilitating programs for volunteers. Excellent knowledge of museum education theory and practice. Master’s degree in Art History, Humanities, Social Sciences, or related field. Bilingual English/Spanish.  Local candidates preferred.
