The Metropolitan museum in New York acquired a tremendous collection of
of ancient artifacts in the 1890's from the U.S. ambassadeur to Cyprus
at the time. He was born in Italy, and acquired most of his artifacts by
digging around "legendary" sites a la Schliemann.

Is anyone familiar with the man and the collection? What was his name
and what ever became of him?

Regards,
