I also faced this same issue, i.e., donors wanting an individual plaque
with
their artifact/donation.   To solve this, we said we would put your
name
in our newsletter.  Another museum I worked had a donor wall with 
a general plaque listing all donors in one location.  Another museum 
had a brick wall with donor names.   

Plaques hindered the public from learning placing more emphasis on the

donor than the artifact/exhibit.  Thus, the policy not to allow for
individual 
plaques.
