What do you want to be a curator of? There are many varieties, and many
different paths to get there.
The first thing would be to begin study in whatever field you seek to
specialize, whether that is art, history, geology, whatever. Being a part
of this listserve over those years, as well as others more specifically
related to your chosen field will be fantastically useful.
Take every opportunity to volunteer or intern at local institutions in your
field, even while you are still in school. Consider non-profits as well as
for-profit institutions that offer activities in your field. A broad base
of experience is always useful. Sometimes that kind of work will turn into
something permanent, or at least give you a better sense of direction for
your career. Network and market yourself before you are at the point of
needing a job, and you will have a much easier time.
Also realize that a masters degree in that field of study is likely going
to be necessary. You did not say what level you are currently pursuing.
Although curatorial work by no means requires it, a masters in a museum
program could be useful. At least a certificate to give you a good base in
curatorial practice. That will be a choice you have to make based on your
career path. By the time you get to where you are looking for a full-time
position, you should already know the specifics of what you want to do.
Casting about randomly will not serve your purposes well. Education,
experience and patience will eventually lead to a position in a place you
enjoy doing what you love.
I apologize that I do not have much specific advice for Minnesota. I know
there are several fantastic museums there in the M/SP area for you to
contact, as well as several corporate headquarters. Brown and Bigelow
publishing has been there for many decades, and might have some cool art
intern opportunities.

Hello,
I am a college student in Minnesota. I am hoping to one day become a
Museum Currator. I was given information to this list by an employee at
the Minneapolis Institute of Arts. I was hoping that if anyone had any
advice for me about schooling and other training to accomplish my goal I
would love to hear it. Thank you so very much.

P.S. I currently attend Hamline University in St. Paul, but i am in the
process of transfering to the University of St. Thomas - also in St. Paul
for the fall semseter.
