Well, I passed the rubber band/cat litter on to my
innovative ADA attorney friend. We've had an ongoing
dialogue about this since then. Her two notes to me
(the second in response to my question about what's
her objection to rubber bands) follow:

NO rubber bands - ever!!! Cotton string ONLY. But
yes it works. Another tip, for bugs and larva - put
the item in the freezer in a freezer box for 3 or 4
days, then pack in cat litter to dry out without
condensation

WHY NO RUBBER BANDS?

Frequently you get a little bit of the rubber imbedded
in the binding or paper; it then off gasses to cause
discoloration over time in some materials - also the
simple traction of the band crushes the material - you
get a ridge where the band was.
