The Lyceum Museum in Old Town Alexandria will host a lecture, "Indians and English Along the Potomac," by New York University Professor of History Dr. Karen Ordahl Kupperman, on June 10th at 7:30 pm.

Dr. Kupperman, who holds a PhD from Cambridge University, will discuss the ways in which English promoters and settlers wrote about American Indians, the ways that both Indians and English each tried to fit the other into their own notions about human nature, and the resulting impact on society as a whole.

The lecture will be held in conjunction with The Lyceum's ongoing exhibition "Changing Perceptions: Charting Alexandria, 1590-1999." The exhibition features a treasure trove of rare period maps and historic objects spanning 400 years which relate to the City's founding and Northern Virginia region, including maps drawn by Thomas Jefferson and a 16-year-old George Washington.

For further information, contact The Lyceum at 703/838-4994. Parking and admission to The Lyceum are free. Located at 201 South Washington Street on the corner of Prince and South Washington Streets, the Lyceum is in the heart of Old Town Alexandria. Additional information on The Lyceum may be found on the Office of Historic Alexandria website at http://ci.alexandria.va.us/oha .
