I'm not aware of any conventions (though I'm sure somewhere someone probably
is).  But I've just been using the inventory number for the item in the
photo or for the photo itself if that's what was donated and scanned for
whatever reason.  This isn't the same as the accession number since I also
must track non-accessioned items for physical accounting purposes.  This
same inventory number is used as the primary field in all my database tables
to tie all the information to the item.  For mulitple photos of the same
item I append a hyphen and Photo2 etc.
