I don't know whether it is standard or not, but in my department when a curator receives an honoraria for a lecture that is a direct result of their position at the museum, they turn it over to the department head who deposits it in one of several departmental restricted funds (museum conservation, museum acquisition or to "support" the collection that the curator is responsible for). As a corollary, the staff person is considered to be "working" and can request comp time under the institutional guidelines.

In addition, the registrars and curators keep count on a monthly basis of contacts by the public for assistance, etc. including type of request, how it was handled and how long it took to complete the request (our institutional library, which is a research facility open to the public, collects similar info). This allows us to keep track of who is being asked to speak, what the topics are and how long it takes to prepare and give a presentations (which is data to be used when pleading our case for more curatorial and registration assistance in given areas.) It also gives senior staff an idea of how the public uses our museum as an informational resource and what are topics of particular interest. After much trial and error, we use a chart that makes keeping data relatively easy. Each person in the department totals their own record monthly and the divisional assistant totals the totals and submitts a report to the divisional director for senior staff.

This is far more info than you asked for or probably need, but I'm in "brain dump" mode today.

All,

One quick question related to the out-of-the-workplace activites of museum
professionals.

If a museum employee receives an honorarium for giving a lecture, is it
standard policy in the museum world for that sum of money to be turned over
to the museum that he or she represents?
