Yes, there was an article in the New York Times last week or the week before
about sleep paralysis (and how the phenomenon led to beliefs in incubi).  It
included that painting.

        cf. also "incubus", which has since become a medical/psychological
term for a
        specific form of nightmare accompanied by the feeling of a crushing
weight
        inhibiting respiration.

        I recall the image, thought not the artist's name, of a 19th century
painting
        or engraving showing an incubus crouching on a sleeping victim's
chest. One
        of the symbolists? romantics?
