When I was at the Nevada State Museum in the mid-80's we mounted a
semi-permanent firearm exhibit. We made metal mounts for the artifacts,
which were then mounted onto plexiglas (1/2") sheets. These plex sheets
"floated" (perhaps four inches) in front of murals with information relevant
to the period of the piece.

BTW, this exhibit has aged nicely because we avoided "trendy" graphics, and
the artifacts are safely mounted, yet still accessible for conservation
measures.
