In my zeal to clean up a crammed inbox I deleted the original post, but if I
remember correctly it had something to do with preservation and stabilization
of the Effigy Mounds. Yes, the Effigy Mounds are zoomorphic and geometric
earthen constructions. They are one class of earthen mounds, some of which
are burial mounds, some of which are temple mounds, some of which are other
forms. Although effigy mounds speficially are fairly restricted in their
distribution (parts of Iowa and esp Wisconsin), mounds are found throughout
eastern North America and were built for one purpose or another during the
course of several millennia.

Anyway, for the poster who was interested in effigy mounds specifically,
Effigy Mounds is a unit of the National Park Service, based in McGregor, Iowa,
so why not contact them directly, as I'm sure they have plenty of actual
experience with what you are interested in. I stopped there a little over a
year ago on my way home from the Society for American Archaeology meeting in
Milwaukee. Expectably, the staff and rangers there are knowledgeable and
friendly. I'd imagine they'd be willing to help. After all, that's one
reason they're there.

Good luck,

Donna Roper
