WITHIN SIX (6) MONTHS FROM DATE OF EMPLOYMENT.   PROOF OF RESIDENCE WILL BE_REQUIRED AT THE                     TIME OF HIRE.        

POSITION: CURATOR-BACKYARD WILDLIFE – (1 Opening) Annual Salary: $40,174.06 - $64,022.40
                      Bi-weekly: $1,545.16 - $2,462.40;    Parks & Neighborhoods/Lichterman NC    J.O. #13-027

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:  Works under the direction of the Manager, Lichterman Nature Center to develop, implement, coordinate, and evaluate all educational and public programming, and other activities at the Backyard Wildlife Center.  Collects, researches, and cares for all live and preserved specimens exhibited, archived, inventoried or otherwise maintained by Lichterman Nature Center which requires extensive knowledge of regulatory requirements regarding captive animals such as fish, reptile, amphibian, bird and mammal care.  Maintains, interprets, and propagates all exhibit specimens using specialized husbandry tools, and environmental control systems which require extensive knowledge of the maintenance of the chemical and microbiological monitoring equipment used for aquariums, terrariums and other enclosed habitats.  Supervises, trains, and manages all staff and volunteers assigned to the Backyard Wildlife Center.  Implements and develops all Backward Wildlife Center exhibits by assembling materials, and setting up props and equipment.  Presents and facilitates scheduled educational programs as assigned to various groups; designs graphics and manuals for educational presentations; plans course content and methods of presentation.  Visits other museum facilities throughout Memphis to participate in speaking engagements, outdoor teaching, field collecting, animal handling, and observing.  Interacts and communicates verbally and in writing with vendors, management, staff, volunteers, government agencies and the general public on a variety of issues and concerns. Creates and provides management with various reports by utilizing various software such as database applications and interactive exhibit programs.  

OTHER FUNCTIONS:
1.	Provides technical assistance to various museum departments regarding the teaching and interpretation of 	natural history and biological sciences and the care and handling of live animals.
2. 	May serve as Manager, Lichterman Nature Center in his/her absence.
3.	Performs additional functions (essential or otherwise) which may be assigned.

TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS:  Must be able to communicate clearly both verbally and in writing with various agencies, management, and staff at all levels of the organization.  Requires the ability to operate office equipment and other specialize tools and equipment in the handling of captive animals.  Requires sufficient mobility to perform duties at Lichterman such as traversing uneven trails, reaching, climbing, bending, and stooping to collect natural history specimens or give outdoor interpretive programs.  Must be able to carry props and exhibit equipment weighing up to 50 lbs or more.  Handles live birds, bees, mammals, fish, invertebrates, amphibians, and reptiles on a regular basis.  Requires the ability to operate an automobile.

TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:  Work is performed in both office environment and outdoors in various locations around the nature center.  Drives regularly to conduct off-site work at other museum facilities throughout Memphis which includes speaking engagements, outdoor teaching, field collecting, animal handling, and specimen observing.  Outside work requires exposure to odors, poison ivy, irritant plants, and all types of weather including heat, cold, rain, etc.  Weekend, evening, and night work required.  Some holiday work may be required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  Bachelor's degree in Biology, Earth Science or a related field and four (4) years of program and project development or museum interpretation with two (2) of the four (4) years in a supervisory capacity or any combination of experience or training, which enables one to perform the essential job functions.   Must participate in on-going training in the qualifications to obtain a US Fish & Wildlife Special Purpose Education Permit. Experience as an interpretive staff member at a nature center is preferred.  Must be willing to work evenings, nights, holidays and weekends.  Must possess a valid driver license.
