Kiersten,
Old Shawnee Town went through a historical society to city transition two
years ago.  If you want information on practical methods give me a call.
The collections changed ownership more than year ago and there have been no
problems.  This type of situation depends a lot on the people involved and
your community.

Can anyone give me some advice on how to deal with a change in
ownership/governance
of a small historical society museum? For instance, how does one deal with
the
ownership of the collections? What role should the former owners (historical
society) play after the transfer of operation to the other entity  (city)? I
know this happens quite often, but I can’t seem to find any literature on
the
subject that is specific to this situation.
