The decrease in tourist travel may be an opportunity for museums to
build stronger relationships with their local communities--after all, if
travel is too expensive for out-of-towners to come your site, then that
should also mean more of your local audience will be sticking around
rather than traveling, right? And, they may be looking for something to
do on their vacation at home.

I've lived in a number of cities that host "be a tourist in your own
town" events, where a number of historic sites and attractions band
together to offer special admission rates and programming to attract
local visitorship. In addition to increasing visitation (or at least,
partially mitigating the drop in tourist visitorship), this raises the
profiles of the institutions in their cities, and has the potential to
increase donations and other forms of community support.

Any one have any other ideas to share about attracting local
audiences?
