Several UK museums use a spot of green paint instead of a marked number
to identify expendable "props" which need to be clearly distinguished
from the permanent collections but do not warrant full nambering and
cataloguing.  I believe this practice originated at the North of England
Open Air Museum, Beamish and is usually referred to as the "green spot
system".
