YOU ARE CORDIALLY INVITED TO ATTEND AAM REGISTRAR'S COMMITTEE MARKETPLACE OF
IDEAS WHERE IDEAS LIVE

Monday April 28, 2008
3:30 pm - 5:30 pm
Four Seasons Ballroom of the Colorado Convention Center in Denver

Leaders in the field will share ideas one-on-one
Students will share ground breaking research (Emerging Voices Forum)
Registrar's Committee elected officials answer your questions

The Registrar's Committee Marketplace is very informal. We invite you to
come in and visit with the presenters for informal chats. We think you'll
find that there is something new and interesting whether you are just
starting out in the profession or have been around for years and years.

LEADERS IN THE FIELD SHARE IDEAS

Integrated pest management - from ID to eradication
Christie Kirsch, Collections Manager, Denver Art Museum will show you which
pests threaten museums and archives and then how to set up and maintain a
museum pest monitoring program, identify the pests, and finally eradicate
them. To illustrate this she'll have specimens, relevant texts, sample pest
traps and lures, and other resources.

Intellectual property (IP) as it applies to museum registration and
collections management Yanmin Huang, Peter Scull, and Robert Pickering will
address your questions. Ms. Huang is an intellectual property paralegal and
former museum registrar who is a consultant to the State Intellectual
Property Office of China and museums in the U.S. and China. Peter Scull is
an Attorney at Law with Berenbaum, Weinshienk & Eason, P.C. His practice
areas are in Intellectual Property including patent, trademark, Copyright,
trade secret, licensing and litigation. Robert Pickering is Collier-Read
Deputy Director for Collections and Education, Buffalo Bill Historical
Center. As the BBHC makes its extensive archival and object collections
more accessible to the public, the BBHC, like many museums, is exploring an
appropriate legal and ethical path through intellectual property rights
practice and law.

Revisiting the Standardized Loan Agreement
Geoffrey Dare, Assistant Registrar, Collections/Loans at the Museum of Fine
Arts, Houston, will introduce the loan agreement during the Marketplace to
the American audience, gauge reactions, and record support and constructive
criticism. The Network of European Museum Organizations (NEMO) drafted a
Standard Loan Agreement. The revised/final draft was presented during the
NEMO November 2007 annual meeting in Riga, Latvia. Come see the latest
incarnation of the standardized loan form and fiercely debate whether it
would work for you and your institution, whether you lender or borrower be.

Denver Area Collections Management Group
No colleagues at your institution to commiserate with about those
job-related frustrations we all encounter? Feeling isolated? Can't wait
for another year to meet with other professionals?
That was the situation that three collection manager/registrars found
themselves in at an MPMA meeting about ten years ago. And there and then
they decided to form the Denver Area Collections Management Group. Since
then the membership has expanded to include registrars and other collections
care professionals from Greeley to La Junta. They meet quarterly for
inspiration, information exchange, support, and camaraderie. You can meet
some of the members and maybe you'll be inspired to start your own group or
join the Denver group.

EMERGING VOICES FORUM
(Mark Schlemmer, Organizer)

Mark Schlemmer - Seton Hall University
Wiggle Room: Documenting Acceptable Levels of Technical and Conceptual
Variance for the Reinstallation of New Media Art
New media installation art can be a daunting challenge for the museum
professional. At the core of the challenge is how to effectively document
the work to facilitate its subsequent installations. This presentation will
focus on the practical "how-to" of dealing with time-based media art for the
museum registrar.

Jen-Li Ko (& Lin-Hui Yang) - University of Wisconsin
A Preliminary Study on a Government-Sponsored Program on Digitalizing Major
Museum Collections in Taiwan
Collections management professionals currently addressing the challenges of
digitization will benefit from this presentation about the National Digital
Archives Program of Taiwan. This case study provides space to rethink the
future directions of digital archives and of museum collection management in
the digital world.

Jan Levinson - University of South Carolina
The Collections Volunteer Group
The "Collections Volunteer Group" is an organization of graduate students in
the Public History Program at the University of South Carolina. Their goal
is to supply extra hands to museums for their collections-based projects.
This presentation will introduce the successful projects carried out thus
far, and facilitate ways to organize similar initiatives in other
communities.

Morgan Elizabeth Little - George Washington University
Emerging Standards of Collections Care for Sacred Objects
What is the relationship between sacred artifacts, the culture that created
them, and the museums that house them today? What should that relationship
look like? This interactive discussion will prove to be a lively forum for a
frank exploration of emerging best practice and issues of stewardship.

Bertram Lyons - University of Kansas
Audiovisual Heritage and the Changing Nature of Responsible Care of
Audiovisual Items
In the traditional museum environment, audiovisual heritage is endangered,
misunderstood, mismanaged and overlooked. Responsible stewardship is
necessary as it is no longer appropriate just to consider issues of proper
storage. This forum will provide remedial changes in the care of audiovisual
heritage which will drastically improve protection on various levels.

Jaime Schwartz - San Francisco State University
Collections Management of American Studio Craft: Setting a Place and
Precedence Museum professionals have never set any real parameters to
evaluate or collect studio craft, nor have they taken the time to consider
the context of its inclusion in institutional holdings. Most studio craft
items are accessioned as objects of decorative arts or design, and
occasionally are even considered folk art. Not having a universal
categorization de-emphasizes the influence and connection studio craft has
to other fine arts and limits its exhibition and collection.

Aimee Taberner - Harvard University Extension School
Museums and the Acquisition of Cultural Property: Strategies for Navigating
the Shifting Legal and Ethical Landscape
This forum will address the various rules, legislation, conventions,
regulations, and treaties which form the foundation of cultural property
policies in museums. For those museum professionals currently navigating the
legal and ethical issues, this presentation will provide practical
information regarding what museum can do to avoid contentious situations.
