EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITY
MUSEUM PROGRAM DIRECTOR

The New York State Council on the Arts is recruiting for the position of
Museum Program Director (M/C Grade 27). The Program administers grants to
arts, history, science and children's museums, to organizations that are
not museums for exhibition support and services to the field. The salary
range is $56,090-71,072, plus $823 location pay. The starting salary
usually begins in the lower end of the range. There is a full benefits
package available including life, health, dental, vision and retirement
plans.

The candidate should have a broad, general knowledge of the practices,
trends and issues facing museum professionals and their institutions.
Candidates must have a four-year college degree or equivalent in addition
to a minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in the
museum field, or an advanced degree, in art history, history, American
Studies, museum studies or allied field and a minimum of four years of
experience within the museum profession.

The position requires strong administrative skills. Candidates should be
prepared to demonstrate excellent organizational and communication skills,
both written and verbal, with attention to detail. Sensitivity to a variety
of aesthetics and ability to work well with people are essential.
Candidates should be available and willing to travel around the state to
meet with applicants and attend arts activities. A valid driver's license
is useful. Candidates must be computer proficient in word processing,
database programs and on-line communications.

The Director of the Museum Program organizes and supervises the review
process of approximately 300 grant applications within the context of
Council policies and procedures. The Director traditionally analyzes
approximately a third of the applications, including those which may pose
most complex and difficult issues. Other duties include conducting forums
and seminars, implementation of technical assistance programs, maintaining
the Museum Program's files and compiling statistics and information. The
Director advises the Council on policy as it relates to the Museum Program
and is the Council's representative to the museum constituency. The
Director also serves on agency-wide committees. The Director supervises two
Program Associates and is supervised by a Deputy Director.
