Jerry Florence Sworn-In to Federal Advisory Board

Washington, DC.-The Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) is
pleased to announce the appointment of Jerry Florence to its National Museum
Services Board (NMSB).  Mr. Florence was appointed by President Clinton and
confirmed by the U.S. Senate to serve on this Federal advisory board.  He
was sworn in at a board meeting today in Washington, DC.  As a member of the
board he will be providing policy advice to IMLS, and independent
grantmaking agency.

Mr. Florence, of Los Angeles, California, is Chairman and Chief Executive
Officer of Florence Brothers Throne Music, a gospel music company in Los
Angeles, California.  He formerly was senior vice president of Corporate
Communications at Sempra Energy, a San Diego-based Fortune 500 energy
services holding company.

Previously, Mr. Florence was President of the Nissan Foundation, the
corporate giving arm of Nissan North America, Inc., a supporter of arts and
cultural activities.  From 1996-1998, he was Vice President for
Communications and Strategic Development at Nissan Motors Corporation USA.
He joined Nissan in 1993 as Vice President for Marketing.

Mr. Florence currently serves on the boards of the National Museum of
American History, the Los Angeles Educational Partnership, National History
Day, and the Thelonius Monk Institute of Jazz.  He has also served as vice
chairman of the board of governors for the Urban League of Los Angeles and
was chairman of the board for Food From The Hood.  In addition, he served on
the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) American Canvas project and
Writercorps.  He also served the American Assembly's council by reviewing
and recommending strategies for the future of arts in America.

A native of Wichita, Mr. Florence holds a bachelor's degree in chemistry
from Wichita State University, and an Executive Management Certificate from
Pennsylvania State University.  Mr. Florence played professional baseball
for the Chicago White Sox Organization from 1966 to 1971.

The NMSB is an advisory body made up of the director of IMLS and fourteen
Presidentially appointed and Senate confirmed members who advise the
Institute on museum services.  Board members represent the museum community
and the general public, and through their collective representation,
contribute specific expertise and broad knowledge of the entire museum
field.
