I work for the Smithsonian in DC and all our domains are something.si.edu.  I
was a little puzzled that we use .edu instead of .gov like all other federal
organizations.  But it was explained that we use .edu and not .gov because we
are first and foremost an educational institution.  (I think this is even
stated in our charter by James Smithson.)

I think that fits rather well.  Tho' theories on the purposes of museums are
changing from being primarily collection/curatorial oriented to more education
oriented.  I guess it depends on the purpose of each museum what their main
goals and focuses are.  Some museums are comerical and thus should have a .com
tag.  Others are set up more like preservation societies and probably should
have a .org.

I don't see a need for a .mus or similar domain name just because we have
enough as is.
