Hi, Christie - Why do you need to get rid of the object name field? It
seems to me you are trying to combine apples and oranges. The name that
the artist gave the work is the object's title; the object name, what
you are, I think calling the created name, should be what the object
actually is, such as painting or vase or left-handed sewer flute. If you
only have one field to take care of both types of names, I'm afraid you
are going to give future registrars headaches. If a title is
descriptive, like Still Life with Little Green Monsters, that's fine,
you can identify the object from that description, but you still won't
know whether it's a watercolor or a pastel or a photograph, will you?
Unless I just don't understand what you're trying to do here. Do you
also have a description field?
Always answer a question with a question, don't you hate that?
Anne

Subject: Distinguishing between official names and created names

Hello Everyone:

In my database, I have objects which have official names created by the
artist but I also have
names created for the object such as "tall vase with green leaves." I
want to combine "object
name" with "title" thus getting rid of the "object name" category in my
database. My question is
how do you recommend that I distinguish between a official name and a
created name in the
database so the viewer won't think that "tall vase with green leaves"
is what the artist named it?

Thank you
