For several years we have not been hand-writing numbers on specimens. Using 100% rag
cotton AF paper we have our desk jet printer produce numbers at the size and boldness
desired to be cut-out. A base coat of polyvinyl acetate (vinac b-? (e-mail for
specifics) with an acetone solvent) is laid down, while still wet the cut-out number
is laid on the base coat and positioned securely, then a top coat of PVA is applied.
This method is archivally sound, reversible, easy, safe and most importantly
'legible'. We do not use it on textiles or paper. I will often mold a paper cut-out to
an uneven area by pressing the paper against the object prior to applying the base
coat. On rocks minerals and fossils this measure has proved effective in securing a
solid grip while minimizing mess.

I highly recommend the process.
