I wrote a report called Museums, Galleries and New Audiences which
started out as a survey of how museums in England attracted new audiences
and ended up as a set of case studies largely of community involvement in
museum programmes, including exhibit development. The report was
published by Art & Society but if you are interested it may be easier for
me to just send you a copy of it. Much of it deals with what you don't
want, namely the importance of community involvement to developing
programmes that attract new audiences and community involvement in a
range og museum programmes. But almost all the case studies were
concerned with developing actual exhibitions. I have written a manual on
attacting new audiences through audience participation for SA museums
which incorporates the UK case-studies but also additional case-studies
from South African museums. Since it also drew on the Field Museums 'Open
Conversations' I know that I sent one to the Field Museum, so you might
find a copy of it in their library.
