ALERT! C.A.R.E. Needs Your Proposal!

With insights and ideas still lingering in the air from the 2001 American
Association of Museums (AAM) Annual Meeting in St. Louis, it’s time to begin
thinking about program proposals for sessions at the 2002 meeting in Dallas.
Next year’s theme, “The Community of Museums: Seeking the Common Good,”
raises some intriguing issues, including:
- how museums acknowledge and traverse the boundaries that define
communities
- whether museums are responsible for recognizing all boundaries and
communities
- how museums will identify and attract audiences, and how they will work to
be active in their communities
- what place museums have in helping society cross community boundaries and
in promoting the common good
Audience-related issues are inherent to the idea of community. The
Committee on Audience Research and Evaluation (CARE) has been an important
advocate for such concerns, and has been proud to sponsor program sessions
on such matters. But WE NEED YOU to continue this critical dialogue!

The deadline for submitting program proposals to be considered for CARE
sponsorship is June 29. Programs sponsored by a Standing Professional
Committee (SPC) such as CARE have the best chance of being accepted by the
AAM National Program Committee. Plus CARE can help you by identifying the
latest trends and issues, acting as an aid in locating speakers, supplying a
peer review to develop and enhance your proposal, and working with other
SPCs to co-sponsor sessions.

After sending your proposal to me, a team of experienced CARE members will
review it. In early August, Beth Twiss-Garrity, CARE chair, and I will go
to Washington, D.C. to lobby for the strongest proposals, and to gather
feedback and support for them from the other SPC program chairs.

To assist you in preparing your program proposal, here are a few helpful
hints from the SPC program chairs’ meeting in St. Louis:
- keep the description, purpose, and learning outcomes detailed, clear, and
concise
- consider other session formats besides panels
- try to avoid single speaker sessions, and reserve “show and tell” sessions
for a marketplace or poster session (unless the description outlines the
broader importance of presenting a single project at one institution)
- make sure all speakers are confirmed, that each program has a chair, and
that there is at least one museum professional on every panel
- use the “Strategic Areas” section as a way to think about how your program
might be useful to museum workers in a variety of disciplines
- try the AAM list serve at http://annualmeeting2002.listbot.com for program
ideas and for help in finding panelists or chairs

If you need copies of the program proposal form, here are two quick and easy
ways to obtain them:
- go to the AAM web site at www.aam-us.org/proposal2002.htm
- call AAM at (202) 289-9113 and ask for a disk or e-mail version
Once you have filled out the form completely, submit it to me (either in
hard copy form or as a file attachment to an e-mail) using the information
below. Feel free to use the AAM web site (www.aam-us.org) to see sample
program proposals, and please call me at (302) 888-6107 at any time if you
have questions.

I’m looking forward to hearing from you soon, and to continuing this
important dialogue about community in Dallas!
