If this work has not already been mentioned, I would suggest Museums and
Communities: The Politics of Public Culture, edited by Ivan Karp, Christine
Mullen Kreamer, and Steven D. Lavine (Smithsonian Press, 1992).  It has
several case studies of how museums and programs have impacted various
local and ethnic communities.

I have used this book successfully for several years in a graduate course
of Museum Studies
