There would only be marginal savings in running a camp for 10-15 over one
for 20-25. The significant staff, utilities, space, etc. expenditure would
be the same for both. Depending on your cost and income structures the
additional 5-10 kids could make the financial difference. This is why there
are 25-30 kids in many public schools and fewer in many private schools.
One way of justifying a small camp would be to make it exclusive for kids of
particularly generous donors-just a thought.

Subject: in defense of small camps

I talked with my boss today briefly about the possibility of budgeting for
a smaller camp (assuming 10-12 kids). She said that if she did that, she
would be forced to defend running a program for such a small number of kids
(and 1 staff would have to be cut from it).

So, I put it to the conglomerate brain: is it worthwhile to put time,
effort, and staff into a day camp for only 10-15 kids? Frankly, I think so.
But I have to put reason to it, and this is all I can come up with right
now:

The kids get time devoted to topics that are (in our case) often given
short shrift (the phasing out of the study of the medieval period in K-12
public school curricula is a very hot topic now in the medievalist
community), it's an enrichment program, and we can trim costs respectively:
certainly a camp for 10-15 kids doesn't have to cost the same as one for
20-25 kids.

Any better reasons from the Museum-L collective brain?
